Roy Ayers: The Godfather of Neo-Soul w/ Farnell Newton & The Othership Connection
Roy Ayers is an American funk, soul, and jazz composer and vibraphone player, and one of the most influential living musical artists of our time. A disciple of the late, great Bobby Hutcherson, Ayers began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing several albums with Atlantic Records before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s, during which he helped pioneer jazz-funk. Over the years, Ayers has also dabbled in jazz fusion, disco, R&B, and house music, making him a true jack of all musical trades. He is also a key figure in acid jazz movement, a musical movement melding jazz into hip-hop and funk, and he has been dubbed by many as "The Godfather of Neo-Soul". Along the way, Ayers has played and recorded with artists as diverse as Chico Hamilton, Rick James, Fela Kuti and Talib Kweli. He is most well known for his signature compositions "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "Running Away", "Don't Stop the Feeling" and "Searchin", and is also famous for having more sampled hits by rappers than any other artist. Some 40+ years into his career, Ayers continues to tour all over the globe playing his feel good music because "I like that happy feeling all of the time."
